This PhD sandwich scholarship are awarded to deserving PhD candidates from developing nations looking to complete half of their studies at Ghent University (the North) and the other half at a developing nation (the South), with funding provided by Gent’s “Special Research Fund.”

Please note that only the portion of the research that will be conducted in Ghent (24 months) will be funded by Ghent University. The candidate must secure full-time financing to do research in the South for the remaining twenty-four months.

PhD Scholarship at Ghent University runs for a duration of 24 months. This scholarship not only supports the candidate’s research in Ghent but also extends financial backing to the Ghent University promoter, providing a monthly bench fee of €310 and an €8,000 travel budget.

This financial support is awarded to cover the operational costs and facilitate the student’s travel, for a conducive research environment.

Eligibility Criteria for Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships

To be eligible for Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2024;

  • Candidates must hail from and hold the nationality of one of the selected developing countries (check the country list via this link: https://www.ugent.be/nl/onderzoek/financiering/bof/dos/countrylist.pdf
  • The proposal submission requires collaboration between the candidate, a supervisor at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university in the South.
  • Restrictions on the field of research are not applicable. However, preference is given to topics relevant to development.
  • This program is available for degree students aspiring to obtain a (joint) PhD degree at Ghent University.
  • Exchange students are ineligible for this scholarship.
  • The initiative focuses on supporting candidates at the initial stages of their PhD journey, encouraging applications from female researchers.
  • Ghent University supervisors can support a maximum of two candidates per call, provided they represent different genders.

Application Process

Mobility scheme of the scholarship:

The mobility scheme, a mandatory component of the scholarship, dictates that students commence and conclude with a research stay of 3-12 months at Ghent University. The first research stay at Ghent University should commence between October 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025.

While the mobility scheme is mandatory, certain exceptions can be requested. Applicants facing constraints due to the partner university’s requirements, field research obligations, or previous funded study periods can seek approval by submitting the “Request exception funding and mobility scheme” form before January 19, 2024.
