Eligible Fields of Study

Applicants may pursue postgraduate degrees in diverse subject areas, including:

• Arts and Law
• Engineering and Physical Sciences
• Life and Environmental Sciences
• Medicine and Health
• Social Sciences and Development (e.g. International Development, Political Science, Social Work, Sociology, Education, Urban Studies)

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the scholarship, you must:

• Be a citizen or resident of Nigeria or Ghana
• Hold (or expect) a 2:1 or higher in your bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
• Receive and accept an offer for a full-time taught master’s programme (excludes PGDip, PGCert, MPhil, MRes, PhD, and distance learning)
• Be classified as an international/overseas fee-paying student
• Select the University of Birmingham as your firm choice
• Pay a £3,000 deposit by the date in your offer letter
• Submit a 250–300 word statement on “Why Birmingham”
• Be able to cover your living and travel/visa expenses
• Apply through a registered local representative before 30th June 2025.

How to Apply

1. Visit the official website.
2. Accept your offer and make Birmingham your firm choice.
3. Pay your £3,000 deposit.
4. Register and apply via a local University of Birmingham representative.
5. Submit a 250–300-word summary titled “Why Birmingham”.
6. Apply by 30th June 2025.

FAQs

1. Can I combine this with other scholarships?

Yes, you can combine it with the £5,000 125th Anniversary Scholarship, but not with full government or major awards.

2. Are business-related programmes eligible?

No. For Business School or MBA programmes, apply for their specific scholarships.

3. What if I defer my admission?

The award is only valid for September 2025. Deferrals will void the scholarship.

4. Can I apply if I’m waiting for a government scholarship?

Yes, but if you later receive a full government scholarship, you will become ineligible.

5. What is the selection based on?

Your academic performance and the quality of your “Why Birmingham” essay.
