About the Scholarship

This QUT PhD scholarship will focus on studying transport phenomena in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs), a class of advanced materials that can conduct both electronic charges and mobile ions.

OMIECs are carbon-based compounds that are soft, flexible, and solution-processable, making them highly promising for next-generation technologies. Their unique properties have already enabled the development of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), which operate at ultra-low voltages (<1V) and have potential applications in:

Biosensing

Environmental monitoring

Neuromorphic (brain-inspired) interfaces

This project will be experimental in nature and will provide opportunities to collaborate with QUT’s Faculty of Science, School of Chemistry and Physics, Centre for Materials Science, and the Bioelectronics & Biosensors group.

Supervision will be provided by:

A/Prof Soniya Yambem (Primary Supervisor)

Dr Mahboobeh Shahbazi (Associate Supervisor)

Dr Wendy Purches (CSIRO) (External Supervisor)

What You’ll Receive

Successful applicants will be awarded:

$40,000 annual stipend (tax-free, indexed annually) for up to 3.5 years, including an extension of 6 months if approved.

Full tuition fee offset/sponsorship for up to 4 years.

The opportunity to work with leading researchers on innovative, real-world projects.

Access to QUT’s advanced research facilities and collaborative networks.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Fulfil QUT’s entry requirements for a research degree, including English language proficiency.

Enrol as a full-time, internal student (unless special approval for part-time/external study is granted).

Be able to commence the PhD program by 1 March 2026.

Have an academic background in one or more of the following fields:

Physics

Materials Science

Nanotechnology

Electronic Engineering

Possess a strong understanding of semiconductor physics and devices.

How to Apply

Follow these steps to apply for the QUT PhD Scholarship 2026:

Email Associate Professor Soniya Yambem with:

Your academic and research background.

Motivation for researching in this field.

Your interest in this scholarship.

An up-to-date CV.

If you receive support, proceed to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a QUT research degree.

In your EOI:

Nominate Associate Professor Soniya Yambem as your proposed principal supervisor.

Copy the scholarship URL into Question 2 of the financial details section.

If your EOI is successful, QUT will guide you through the next steps for full admission and scholarship confirmation.
