Kofi Annan Award for Innovation in Africa 2024 (up to EUR 250,000) – Apply Now

Applications are currently being accepted for the Kofi Annan Award for Innovation in Africa 2024. This award, initiated by the Austrian Federal Chancellery in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Innovation Accelerator, the Austrian Development Agency, and the Kofi Annan Foundation, seeks to identify and support social entrepreneurs with digital or technology-powered solutions in Africa to lay the groundwork for scalability.

In its second edition, the award focuses on innovative solutions enhancing food security and food systems resilience across Africa, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 2, Zero Hunger.


  • Acceleration Bootcamp: Nine promising teams will participate in a fully virtual WFP Innovation Bootcamp, collaborating with technical and industry mentors for expert guidance to refine and develop their innovative solutions.
  • Funding Opportunities: Ventures progressing to the bootcamp stage are eligible to apply for equity-free funding, with the potential to receive financial support of up to EUR 250,000 per innovation, totalling three awards.
  • Sprint Programme: The three selected ventures receiving EUR 250,000 in equity-free funding will join a 12-month WFP Sprint Programme, gaining access to mentorship, a global network, and resources to expedite their growth and impact.
  • Network of Innovators: All nine ventures, regardless of funding outcomes, will access a robust network of relevant businesses, investors, and mentors, enhancing their potential for long-term success and sustainability.


  • For-profit legal entity incorporated for at least two years.
  • Solution anchored in at least one African country.
  • Existing contacts/presence in the country of implementation.
  • Innovation addressing priority topics in the call for applications.
  • Innovation impacting more than 1 million people.
  • At least at the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) stage.
  • Committed founding team with a minimum of three full-time employees.
  • Evidence of user/customer validation.
  • A clear path to commercial viability and financial sustainability.
  • Potential plan for the 12-month Sprint programme.
  • Positive impact on food security, employment, income generation, and/or climate resilience.
  • Diverse, non-discriminatory, gender-balanced venture with demonstrated leadership and vision.
  • Focus on promoting gender equality and empowering women.
  • No alignment with any points listed in the solemn declaration.
  • Attention to environmental protection, climate change, gender equality, women empowerment, and social inclusion.
