John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships At Stanford University

The program is looking for journalists who are enthusiastic about exploring, identifying, and testing ideas to enhance access to news and information, which are essential for fostering vibrant democratic communities.

John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships At Stanford University

A JSK Fellowship offers a personalized experience while also incorporating twice-weekly cohort activities such as leadership workshops, skills training, and discussions with guest experts. Apart from these cohort obligations, fellows have considerable flexibility in deciding how to allocate their time and approach the specific journalism challenge they wish to focus on.

Each fellow is assigned a primary advisor from the JSK directors, with whom they regularly meet throughout the year. There is no predetermined formula for a successful fellowship year; it is tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

Expectations

Being selected as a JSK Fellow requires a commitment of your full time. During the fellowship, you will be provided with a monthly stipend and health insurance coverage for yourself and your dependents, and it is expected that you prioritize the fellowship over other professional engagements.

You will be responsible for fulfilling the following criteria:

  • You must be present at Stanford University for the entirety of the academic year, from September to June.
  • It is required that you devote yourself completely to the fellowship, fully immersing yourself in the experience.
  • Regular attendance at weekly cohort meetings and biweekly meetings with your advisor, as well as participation in occasional JSK events, is expected.
  • Throughout the year, you will be encouraged to publicly share your work and insights.
  • Collaboration with a diverse group of individuals offering various ideas, experiences, and perspectives is an essential aspect of the fellowship.

Benefits

  • Individual coaching and tailored workshops to develop leadership resilience and mindsets for leading change.
  • An intentionally designed cohort experience fostering meaningful personal and professional relationships.
  • Access to the intellectual resources of a world-class university.
  • Membership in the global JSK alumni community.
  • A stipend of $95,000, plus a housing supplement for rent assistance.
  • Stanford tuition for fellows and health insurance coverage for fellows, spouses, and children.
  • Assistance and advice were provided for finding rental housing.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Individuals eligible for this opportunity include U.S. and international journalists who work for both digital-native and traditional news organizations, as well as independent journalists, journalism entrepreneurs, and journalism innovators.
  • To qualify, applicants must have a minimum of five years of full-time professional journalism experience. A college degree or prior experience in conventional newsrooms is not necessary. However, involvement as a student journalist or summer intern, while valuable, does not count towards the required five-year threshold.
  • Individuals employed in public information or public relations roles, trade and house newsletters or magazines, government agencies, or academic positions are not eligible for this program.
  • It’s important to clarify that this fellowship does not provide support for book projects or reporting initiatives, and it is not designed as a business accelerator.
