Things to Know and Do Before You Can Find Your Airpods

Apple’s Find My network can be a lifesaver when you’re trying to locate your lost or stolen AirPods. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it works:

Find My Network Overview

Apple products, including AirPods, connect to a network called Find My. This network is created by linking various Apple devices together through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Ultra Wideband.

Find My acts like a crowd-sourced search party to help you pinpoint the general location of your lost Apple gadgets, including your AirPods.

Compatibility Across AirPods Generations

Regardless of which generation of AirPods you own (AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max), the Find My experience is quite similar. However, there are a few extra features for AirPods Pro 2.

How to Enable Find My

To make use of the Find My network, it’s essential to ensure you’re opted in. So, make sure this feature is turned on before your AirPods go missing.

Setting Up Find My on Your iPhone

To enable Find Me, follow these steps on your iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on your name at the top.
  • Select Find My.
  • Verify that “Find My iPhone” is switched on.

You can also access additional settings in this menu to join the Find My network and enable features like sharing your iPhone’s last known location before the battery runs out.

Receive “Left Behind” Notifications

It’s a good idea to set up “left behind” notifications for devices like AirPods in the Find My app. This can help you avoid leaving your AirPods behind in the first place. Here’s how:

  • Open the Find My app.
  • Tap the Devices tab at the bottom of the screen.
  • Locate your AirPods from the list and tap on them.
  • Toggle on the “Notify When Left Behind” feature.
  • You can also set exceptions, like your home address, to fine-tune when you receive notifications.

This feature is particularly useful for preventing your AirPods from being accidentally left in places like the office or gym locker. However, even if they’ve been left in a less specific location, Find My can still help you get within a few feet of your lost AirPods.

How to find AirPods

If you’ve lost your AirPods, you can use Apple’s Find My app to track them down. However, please note that Apple advises against attempting to recover stolen items on your own and instead recommends reporting theft to the police. Here’s how to find your AirPods:

  1. Open the Find My app on your Apple device.
  2. Tap the Devices tab located at the bottom of the screen.
  3. From the list, locate your missing AirPods and tap on them.
  4. In the menu that appears, you can use options to find your AirPods or activate the Lost Mode.

The effectiveness of the Find My menu may vary depending on the specific model of your AirPods, and whether the case is open or closed.

For AirPods Pro 2:

AirPods Pro 2 have some unique features. They come with a U1 chip that enables precise tracking. Unlike other models, you can locate these even if they are inside the case.

The case has speakers that make a loud sound when activated. Additionally, the U1 Ultra Wideband chip can guide you within inches of the lost AirPods Pro 2 case.

For Other AirPods Models

All other AirPods, including standard AirPods and AirPods Max, work with Find My through Bluetooth connection. This means they can be located when out of the charging case or sleeve. If they are out of the case, you can use the “Find” or “Play Sound” function in Find My to help locate them.

But remember, this only works if your iPhone can connect with the AirPods via Bluetooth.

Lost Mode for AirPods

You can activate Lost Mode for your AirPods using the Find My app. This mode notifies you when your AirPods are located. However, AirPods can’t connect to the internet on their own, so Lost Mode only works when they connect to a new online device.

If your AirPods are found, you can leave a custom message with your contact information.

Note: Lost Mode doesn’t prevent the AirPods from being used by others, but the device will be labelled as “Not Your AirPods.”

What to Do If Your AirPods Are Stolen

If your AirPods are stolen, don’t try to confront the thief or track the stolen devices yourself. Instead, report the theft to the police.

Lost Mode may help you locate your stolen AirPods if they are used or sold, but always involve law enforcement in such situations. AirPods can be easily replaced, so it’s not worth risking your safety over them.

Ordering Replacement AirPods Parts

If you lose an AirPod or the charging case, you can contact Apple Support with the serial number of your AirPods. You can find the serial number on your iPhone by going to Settings > Bluetooth > and tapping on your AirPods. Apple offers replacement parts at a reduced price.

Please note that Apple does not offer insurance for lost AirPods through AppleCare, so if your AirPods are lost, you’ll need to purchase a new set at the retail price.
