Nominations are currently open for the prestigious Esserman-Knight Journalism Awards 2024. These awards aim to honor and inspire outstanding investigative and public service reporting in South Florida, fostering a community deeply committed to local news.

Entries should be dedicated to serving the public interest by holding the powerful accountable, shedding light on pervasive or underreported community issues, or breaking new ground on a significant matter.

Judging criteria will consider the quality of analysis and storytelling, the rigor of newsgathering, the inclusion of community voices, and the impact on public understanding or action.

Prizes

The awards comprise:

  • $10,000 first prize
  • $5,000 second prize
  • $1,000 honorable mention prizes

Eligibility requirements 

  • The awards are open for nomination only; self-nominations will not be accepted.
  • Anyone, regardless of location, can nominate an article or a series of related articles (up to three) on a single topic.
  • Journalists or teams of journalists who published or broadcasted stories in 2023 with original reporting from Miami-Dade, Broward, or Monroe counties are eligible.
  • Nominations from all mediums—print, online, television, podcasts, radio, video, audio, and data visualization work, either standalone or in combination—are encouraged.

Nomination process

  • Nominations are accepted until February 12, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
  • Winners will be notified in April, with a public announcement and awards event to follow.
