Applications for the 2024-25 DAAD Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience (PRIME) are now open. PRIME is a competitive funding programme designed for postdoctoral fellows who intend to further their careers in Germany. Candidates from all faculties may apply if their qualifications are above average.


Fellows, however, ought to have finished their PhD with distinction before the commencement of the funding period. Regarding nationality and current residency, there are no limitations. However, there can be limitations when selecting the destination countries for the international stay, contingent upon nationality and place of residency.

Details About DAAD PRIME 2024-25

The International mobility of postdoctoral researchers at German institutions on temporary contracts is funded by DAAD PRIME. Postdocs who choose Germany as their long-term career destination are eligible for funding for an independent research stay based on a one-time job at a German university.

The objective of the DAAD PRIME program is to give participants a crucial credential for a sustained career in science. Postdoctoral scholars who envision a long-term professional career in Germany are the target audience.

Benefits of the DAAD PRIME Program


  • For the purpose of conducting a 12-month research stay abroad, DAAD provides funds for an 18-month job contract at a German institution, followed by a return phase to Germany.
  • Fellows may mix stays at various research institutes throughout one or more nations during their year abroad.

Duration of Funding

  • Support from DAAD is given for a total of eighteen (18) months, of which twelve (12) are spent overseas and the final six (6) months of the return phase are spent in Germany (funding cycle 12+6).
  • In the event that a fellow’s science, insurance, or residency law needs a different schedule, they’re allowed to choose another model with DAAD’s agreement.


The DAAD will finalize a grant arrangement with the relevant German university, that will pay for both the monthly expatriate allowance and the regular wage.

  • Salary: Based on a wage scale, a temporary employment contract of eighteen months at a German university TV-L EG 13. The colleges calculate fellow’s actual salary based on their prior work experience.
  • Expatriate allowance: Based on the region categorization of the destination and the fellows’ gross income, a monthly expatriate stipend is provided during research stays overseas.
  • Travel allowance: The DAAD lump sum travel stipend for postdoctoral scientists is awarded to PRIME Fellows. Children and spouses (by marriage or under German civil partnership law) may also apply, provided they accompany the fellow for a minimum of one month while conducting research overseas. The travel allowance is provided by DAAD directly and is not included in the grant agreement with the German university.

Eligibility Requirements for the DAAD PRIME Program

  • Considerations will be given only to candidates with an excellent scientific record, with a minimum of one publication.
  • Candidates must have completed their doctorate with excellent record before the start of funding.
  • The program allows applicants to apply up to six years after the (first) doctorate, given consideration to Parental and care periods.
  • Applicants are required to Adhere to the Programme’s mobility rule that states that, they are free to choose any country (except Germany) as a destination for their research stay abroad, as long as they have not resided or carried out their main activity in that country for more than 12 months during the three years preceding the application deadline of 30 August 2024.
  • Those with a permanent employment contract with the prospective host institution for the intended research activity are not eligible for funding.
  • They must agree to the “Rules of good scientific practice” and the ethical guidelines of the programme.

Selection Process

  • About six weeks after the application deadline, all applicants receive information about the results of the formal eligibility check.
  • All applications that proceed to the review phase are examined by outside experts (scientists in the relevant field).
  • The interdisciplinary selection committee determines the final rating based on the outside reviews and creates a ranking list.
  • The number of successful applicants and reserve candidates is determined by the available funds
  • Subsequently, applicants successfully selected, are invited to a virtual orientation seminar before the fellowship commences.
