It is a global initiative that aims to capitalize on the interlinkages between Population and health. Environment, and Development (PHED) to generate strong political commitment, sustainable financial resources, and accountability. For voluntary family planning and reproductive health in low- and middle-income countries.

 Program Details

The BUILD project plans to introduce a global PHED Leadership Program to cultivate. And empower the next generation of PHED (Public Health and Environment Development) leaders. With a particular focus on women and young individuals. The program will select participants from four regions and conduct training sessions in the project’s hub countries. Kenya for the East Africa region, Malawi for the Southern Africa region, Cote d’Ivoire for the West Africa region, and the Philippines for the Asia Pacific region.

This program targets young people, especially women, from various backgrounds such as government agencies, local and national organizations, regional and international bodies, civil society organizations (CSOs), and the private sector. Individuals who have the potential to implement or support PHED-related initiatives are also encouraged to apply.

The inaugural training for the Southern Africa region will take place in Malawi, with the first cohort scheduled for February 5-16, 2024, and the second cohort’s training planned for April 22-May 3, 2024. Each cohort will consist of approximately 20 participants, including advocates, community leaders, social influencers, program and project officers, planners, policy influencers, and policymakers from Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Applications are now open for the February and April-May 2024 cohorts for the Southern Africa region within the BUILD project. The program begins with a 12-day in-person training event in Malawi and continues for 12 months, incorporating virtual follow-up sessions at regular intervals. These sessions are designed to provide participants with the necessary cross-sectoral skills and knowledge to advocate for, plan, and implement integrated programs that address interconnected development goals.

 Benefit

  • The program organizers will cover the expenses for tuition fees, travel (including airline tickets and ground transfer fees), visas, accommodation, medical incidentals, and all meals (or provide a daily subsistence allowance for meals) during the initial training event.

 Eligibility Requirement

  • Applicants must fall within the age range of 18 to 29 years old (applicants should be at least 18 years old and no older than 29 years old on the first day of the desired training).
  • Fluency in English is mandatory.
  • Applicants must hold citizenship in Malawi, Zambia, or Zimbabwe, and possess a high school diploma from a recognized institution or relevant qualifications (such as relevant work experience).
  • Having some experience in cross-sectoral programming or planning, analytical skills, and knowledge of computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs Editors Office suite) would be beneficial.

Note: The initial training will occur in person in Malawi, located outside Lilongwe or Blantyre. Subsequent follow-up sessions throughout the remaining 12 months of the program will be conducted online.

Evaluation Criteria

  • A group consisting of experts in PHED, gender, and youth will evaluate the applications and choose candidates. Who show genuine interest and have already taken initial steps towards pursuing a career in sectors. Such as gender, environment, health, family planning, and community development.
