About the Nordic Scholarship Programme

The Nordic Scholarship Programme is administered by the Nordic Africa Institute, a research institute based in Uppsala, Sweden.

The programme aims to strengthen research about Africa and encourage collaboration between researchers and academic institutions in the Nordic region.

Selected scholars receive an opportunity to spend one month at the institute, where they can use its library collections, consult research materials, and connect with researchers working on related topics.

The institute’s collections include books, periodicals, newspapers and government publications covering contemporary Africa.

This opportunity is particularly useful for researchers whose work would benefit from specialised African studies resources or collaboration with researchers at the institute.

Important: This is a short-term research scholarship, not a full-degree scholarship. It does not fund an entire bachelor’s or master’s degree programme.

Benefits of the Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027

1. Travel expenses

The programme covers travel expenses for the least expensive eligible fare from the applicant’s residential address in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Iceland to Uppsala and back.

Applicants should consult the official programme instructions for any travel arrangements or reimbursement requirements.

2. Free accommodation

Selected scholars receive free accommodation in a central location in Uppsala for the duration of their one-month visit.

This reduces the cost of arranging temporary housing while conducting research in Sweden.

3. SEK 400 daily subsistence allowance

The scholarship includes a daily subsistence allowance of SEK 400 to help cover living expenses during the research stay.

For a 30-day stay, this would amount to SEK 12,000, assuming the allowance is paid for all 30 days. The actual total depends on the approved duration of the visit.

4. Access to specialised research resources

Scholars can use the Nordic Africa Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa.

These resources can help researchers develop their arguments, review relevant literature, and strengthen their research projects.

5. Academic networking opportunities

The programme supports connections with researchers and research hosts at the institute.

These connections can help visiting scholars exchange ideas, develop their research, and build professional relationships with other academics working on Africa-related subjects.

6. Shared office workspace

Fellows receive a desk and computer in a shared office at the institute during their stay.

This provides a dedicated working environment for reading, writing and other approved research activities.

Important financial limitation

The programme does not include health insurance or other insurance coverage. Applicants should make arrangements for appropriate insurance before travelling to Sweden.

The programme’s published benefits should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every personal expense will be covered.

Eligibility Requirements for the Nordic Scholarship Programme 2027

Applicants must meet the programme’s academic, institutional and research requirements.

1. Academic or research status

Applicants must belong to one of the following groups:
