If you’re planning to study for a master’s degree in Canada, one question probably comes up early: What GPA do you need for a master’s scholarship in Canada?

"What
What GPA Do You Need for a Master’s Scholarship in Canada

The honest answer is that there isn’t one GPA requirement for every scholarship. Each university and scholarship has its own criteria.

However, having a GPA of 3.0 or higher can make you eligible for some graduate programs, while competitive scholarships often look for students with a GPA closer to 3.5–3.7 or higher.

Is a 3.0 GPA Enough for a Master’s Scholarship in Canada?

A 3.0 GPA can be enough for admission to some Canadian master’s programs, but admission and scholarship requirements are not always the same.

For example, the University of Manitoba requires international graduate applicants to have at least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent in their most recent two years of full-time study for graduate admission. However, its International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship requires a considerably higher 3.75 GPA on a 4.5 scale.

This shows why you shouldn’t assume that meeting the university’s minimum admission GPA automatically qualifies you for funding.

What GPA Is Good for a Master’s Scholarship?

As a general guide:

GPA

Scholarship outlook

3.0–3.29

Some scholarships may be available

3.3–3.49

Good for a wider range of opportunities

3.5–3.69

Strong scholarship position

3.7+

Very competitive for many academic awards

These figures are a guide, not universal cutoffs. Some scholarships don’t focus entirely on GPA and may consider leadership, research experience, community involvement, work experience, financial need or other achievements.

For example, the Canada Graduate Research Scholarships–Master’s (CGRS M) program requires a first-class average in the last two completed years of study. At the University of Calgary, this is currently defined as a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the last two years.

What If Your GPA Is Below 3.5?

Don’t give up.

A GPA below 3.5 doesn’t automatically mean you cannot get a scholarship in Canada. Scholarship requirements vary considerably, and some opportunities may place more emphasis on your overall application than on GPA alone.

You can strengthen your application with:
