About the KAUST Global Fellowship

The KAUST Global Fellowship is designed for outstanding early-career researchers who want to move toward an independent research career.

The programme is based at KAUST in Saudi Arabia and requires Fellows to live and work there full-time during the fellowship.

KAUST Global Fellowship Research Areas

Health

Energy

Research proposals must also align with one of KAUST’s academic divisions:

Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE)

Biomedical Sciences (BioMed)

Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering (CEMSE)

Physical Science and Engineering (PSE)

KAUST Global Fellowship Benefits

US$75,000 Annual Stipend

Global Fellows receive an annual living stipend of US$75,000, equivalent to US$6,250 per month.

The fellowship provides this stipend for the three-year fellowship period.

Up to US$40,000 Research Funding

Fellows receive a separate research allowance of up to US$40,000 per year.

This funding can support eligible research costs, including research travel, consumables and use of KAUST Core Labs.

Accommodation

The fellowship package includes on-campus accommodation, helping Fellows focus on their research while living at KAUST.

Medical Insurance

Global Fellows receive medical insurance as part of the fellowship benefits.

Relocation Support

The fellowship provides a relocation allowance for eligible Fellows moving to KAUST.

The current application guidelines specify a flat relocation allowance of US$3,000. Travel tickets are booked and covered directly by the university.

Annual Travel Assistance

Global Fellows and eligible dependents receive an annual travel allowance as part of the fellowship benefits.

Family Benefits

Fellows can bring eligible dependents, including a spouse and children.

Families living on campus can access the KAUST School free for up to three children, while daycare support is available for children under four. Eligible family members also receive medical insurance.

Who Can Apply for the KAUST Global Fellowship?

The fellowship is open to researchers of all nationalities.

For Call 2027, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Have received their PhD after January 2023.

Applicants who have not yet received their PhD must expect to complete it before the fellowship begins.

Be prepared to move to KAUST in Saudi Arabia.

Be willing to undertake a three-year research project.

Identify suitable KAUST faculty members whose research aligns with the proposed project.

Propose research connected to one or more of KAUST’s research missions.

KAUST encourages applications from women to promote greater gender balance in science and engineering.

Can Applicants Who Have Not Finished Their PhD Apply?

Yes.

Applicants who have not yet been awarded their PhD can apply if they expect to complete the degree before the start of the fellowship.

For Call 2027, applicants who already hold a PhD must have received it after January 2023.

Career Breaks

KAUST can consider certain justified career breaks when applying the four-year PhD eligibility rule.

The programme specifically states that parental leave or military/civil service may be considered when determining eligibility.

Voluntary career breaks that are not covered by these provisions do not qualify for an exception.

Do You Need a KAUST Host Professor?

A confirmed host is not required when submitting the Stage 1 Concept Note.

Applicants must identify potential KAUST faculty members whose research aligns with their proposed work.

KAUST’s current application guidance says applicants can identify up to two potential KAUST faculty members at Stage 1. Those faculty members review the Concept Note and decide whether to support the application.

Only applications that receive faculty support progress to the full-proposal stage.

If an applicant has already secured a host or is affiliated with KAUST, the application instructions state that they should list only that faculty member.

KAUST Global Fellowship Application Process

The 2027 call has two stages.

Stage 1: Concept Note

The first stage runs from:

1 September to 1 October 2026

Applicants submit a Concept Note explaining their proposed research.

At this stage, applicants do not need a Host PI support letter.

However, they must identify potential KAUST faculty members whose research aligns with the proposed project.

Stage 2: Full Research Proposal

Applicants who receive support from a KAUST faculty member are invited to submit a full research proposal.

The Stage 2 application period is:

15 November 2026 to 15 January 2027

Only applicants invited to this stage can submit the full proposal.

Documents Required for Stage 1

KAUST currently requires applicants to submit the following:

Current CV with full publication list, maximum four pages

Up to two selected publications

Concept Note using the official template

Two reference letters

Applications must be prepared in English and submitted through the online application system.

Applicants should download the official Call 2027 templates and application guidelines before preparing their documents.

What Should the Research Proposal Focus On?

The proposed project must address one or more of KAUST’s research missions:

Water, Food, Health, Energy, AI or the Red Sea.

The project should be designed as a three-year research project and must demonstrate novelty and innovation beyond the applicant’s PhD research or current project.

KAUST also states that a proposal should not simply reproduce research already being conducted in the proposed Host PI’s laboratory.

KAUST Global Fellowship Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed based on:

Research excellence

Innovation

Feasibility

Alignment with KAUST’s research priorities

The programme is merit-based, and faculty support is required for an application to move from the Concept Note stage to the full proposal stage.

How to Apply for the KAUST Global Fellowship 2027

To apply:

Check that you meet the PhD and research requirements.

Identify suitable KAUST faculty members.

Special consideration for candidates affected by conflict

For the 2026–27 academic year, the EUI stated that candidates in History, Law, and Political and Social Sciences whose academic progress was affected by an ongoing war or other armed conflict could receive special consideration.

The EUI’s current doctoral programme pages continue to state that candidates affected by ongoing war or armed conflict may receive special consideration. Applicants should check the funding page and the relevant doctoral programme application instructions when the 2027 intake application opens in November 2026 for the exact provisions applicable to that cycle.

Candidates who do not have one of the listed nationalities may exceptionally qualify under the conflict-related provision for the relevant departments.

Other applicants who are not eligible for any EUI funding programme may be admitted only if they can secure an external scholarship.

Degree Requirements

Applicants for an EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship must have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in an academic discipline relevant to the selected EUI doctoral programme and research proposal.

The degree must be awarded by 31 August of the year in which the doctoral programme starts. For the 2027 intake, this means the degree must be obtained by 31 August 2027.

Your academic background should also be appropriate for the doctoral programme you are applying to.

Available PhD Programmes

The special fellowships are connected to four main EUI doctoral areas:

PhD in Economics: The Adam Smith Doctoral Fellowship is associated with the EUI Doctoral Programme in Economics.

History: The Jacob Burckhardt Doctoral Fellowship supports eligible candidates applying to the EUI Doctoral Programme in History and Civilisation.

PhD in Law: The Hans Kelsen Doctoral Fellowship is connected to the EUI Doctoral Programme in Law.

PhD in Political and Social Sciences: The Hannah Arendt Doctoral Fellowship is associated with the EUI Doctoral Programme in Political and Social Sciences.

EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship Benefits

€1,650 Monthly Grant: The fellowship currently provides a monthly grant of €1,650, applicable from 1 January 2026.

Family Allowance: The EUI lists a family allowance as one of the benefits available under the Special Doctoral Fellowship.

Travel Allowance: Fellows are also eligible for a travel allowance.

Health Insurance: The funding package includes insurance. EUI registration information also identifies EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship recipients among researchers who can receive medical insurance coverage through the EUI collective medical policy at the expense of the relevant funding authority.

Is There a Separate Scholarship Application?

No. This is one of the most important things applicants should know.

The application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme automatically serves as the application for the EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship.

When completing the online EUI application, candidates who want to be considered for this funding should select “EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship Programme” under the Funding Authorities section.

Applicants must also indicate their nationality in the Justification field.

How to Apply for the EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship

The application is completed online through the EUI doctoral programme application system.

1: Choose Your PhD Programme

Select the EUI doctoral programme that matches your academic background and proposed research.

You can apply to only one EUI programme in the application cycle.

2: Prepare Your Research Proposal

Your research proposal is an important part of the application. It should explain your proposed PhD research and demonstrate that the project can be supervised within the selected EUI department.

For example, the EUI Law programme requires a research proposal written in English or French and limited to 2,500 words, including footnotes, references and bibliography. Applicants should check the specific requirements of their chosen department because document requirements can differ.

3: Select the Special Fellowship

In the funding section of the online application, select:

EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship Programme

You should also enter your nationality in the required justification field.

4: Register Your Referees

Applicants should register their academic referees early.

For most departments, two academic reference letters are required. Economics requires three academic referees. References must be submitted directly by the referees through the EUI system by the application deadline.

5: Submit Your Application

Submit the completed online application and all required documents before the deadline.

For the 2027 EUI doctoral intake, the application deadline is:

15 January 2027 at 14:00 CET (Italy time).

Official Application

Applicants should use the European University Institute’s official application system and review the funding requirements for their chosen department before submitting.

Official EUI Special Doctoral Fellowships page:
EUI Special Doctoral Fellowships – Official Website

Official EUI Doctoral Programme application information:
EUI Doctoral Programmes – Application Information

English Language Requirements

The EUI expects applicants to demonstrate C1-level English proficiency.

The currently recognised international English tests include:

IELTS: 7.5 or higher

TOEFL iBT: 110 or higher

Cambridge Proficiency: A, B or C

Cambridge English Advanced (CAE): A or B

Applicants who are native English speakers or who completed a degree programme entirely taught in English may qualify for an exemption from submitting an English certificate, subject to the EUI’s rules.

If an applicant cannot provide the required certificate by the deadline because of an accepted extenuating circumstance, the EUI provides a procedure for explaining the situation. Pre-selected candidates without an accepted certificate may be required to take an EUI English assessment.

Conflict-Affected Applicants

Candidates in History, Law and Political and Social Sciences whose academic progress has been disrupted by an ongoing war or other armed conflict may be considered under the EUI’s special provision.

The EUI states that eligible applicants should provide a separate statement of up to 700 words explaining their circumstances and how the conflict has affected their academic progress.

The statement is treated confidentially and is used to assess funding eligibility and the application.

For the 2027 intake, applicants should follow the instructions displayed in the online application form when applications open in November 2026.

EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship Deadline 2026/2027

The next EUI doctoral application round opens in early November 2026.

The deadline is: 15 January 2027 at 14:00 CET

The doctoral programmes begin on: 1 September 2027

The EUI confirms these dates on its current doctoral programme pages for Economics, History and Law.

Applicants should not wait until the final day to begin the application because referees must also submit their reference letters by the deadline.

FAQs

Is the EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship fully funded?

No. The EUI doctoral admission application automatically serves as the application for the Special Doctoral Fellowship. You must select the EUI Special Doctoral Fellowship Programme in the funding section of the application.

What Is the UK Student Visa?

The UK Student Visa is the main immigration route for international students aged 16 or over who want to study an eligible further or higher education course in the UK.

To qualify, you generally need to:

Have an offer from a licensed student sponsor.

Have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself.

Meet the English-language requirement.

Provide the required documents.

Obtain a CAS from your education provider.

Meet any additional requirements that apply to your course or nationality.

The Student Visa replaced the former Tier 4 (General) Student Visa.

1. Get Admission From a UK University or Approved Institution

You cannot normally apply for a UK Student Visa simply because you want to study in Britain.

You first need an offer from a licensed student sponsor.

Once you have accepted your offer and met your university’s conditions, the institution will issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

Your CAS contains important information about your course, including details that UK Visas and Immigration uses to assess your Student Visa application.

You must provide your CAS reference number when applying.

2. Have a Valid Passport

You need a current passport or another valid travel document when applying for your Student Visa.

Make sure the personal information on your passport matches the information on your university application and visa application.

If your passport is close to expiring, consider renewing it before beginning the application process.

The UK government lists a current passport or valid travel document among the documents required for a Student Visa application.

3. Meet the Financial Requirements

One of the most important UK Student Visa requirements is proving that you have enough money to support yourself and pay your tuition fees.

You normally need to show enough money for:

Your outstanding course fees for one academic year, as shown on your CAS.

Your living expenses in the UK.

Current UK Student Visa Maintenance Funds

For students applying under the current rules, the maintenance requirement is:

£1,529 per month for courses in London, for up to 9 months.

£1,171 per month for courses outside London, for up to 9 months.

This means a student may need to demonstrate up to:

£13,761 for London (£1,529 × 9)

£10,539 outside London (£1,171 × 9)

These figures are in addition to the required tuition funds unless an exemption applies.

How Long Must the Money Be in Your Account?

Where financial evidence is required, you generally need to have held the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days.

The end date of that 28-day period must normally be within 31 days of your visa application date.

Students should therefore avoid transferring money into an account shortly before applying and assuming that the balance will automatically qualify as financial evidence.

4. Prove Your English Language Ability

Most Student Visa applicants need to prove their knowledge of English.

For degree-level study or above, the required level is generally CEFR B2.

For study below degree level, the requirement is generally CEFR B1.

You may be able to prove your English through:

An approved English-language test.

A qualifying UK school qualification.

A UK degree.

A degree taught in English from an overseas institution, where the relevant requirements are met.

An English assessment conducted by an eligible higher education provider for certain degree-level courses.

Not every student needs to take IELTS specifically. The acceptable evidence depends on your circumstances and course.

5. Provide Your CAS

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is one of the most important documents in your Student Visa application.

Your education provider issues the CAS after you have accepted your place and satisfied its requirements.

The CAS provides UKVI with information about your:

Course

Institution

Tuition fees

Course start date

Course end date

Sponsorship details

Check your CAS carefully before submitting your visa application.

If there is incorrect information, contact your university before applying.

6. TB Test for Applicants From Nigeria

Applicants from Nigeria should pay particular attention to the tuberculosis requirement.

If you are coming to the UK for more than 6 months, have lived in Nigeria for at least 6 months and were living in Nigeria or another listed country within the relevant period, you will generally need a TB test.

Nigeria is currently on the UK’s list of countries where applicants may need TB screening.

The test must be completed at a Home Office-approved clinic.

The UK government currently lists an approved International Organization for Migration (IOM) clinic in Abuja for UK visa TB testing.

A TB certificate is generally valid for 6 months from the date of the chest X-ray when an X-ray is performed.

7. ATAS Certificate May Be Required

Some international students studying certain sensitive subjects at postgraduate level may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

This does not apply to every student or every master’s course.

If your course and nationality require ATAS clearance, you need to obtain the certificate before applying for your Student Visa.

The UK government specifically advises students studying a master’s degree or above to check whether ATAS applies to them.

8. Pay the UK Student Visa Fee

The current Student Visa application fee is £558 for applications made from outside the UK and for eligible applications to extend or switch from inside the UK.

The fee is separate from other costs associated with studying in the UK.

9. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge

International students also normally pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of the visa process.

The current student rate is £776 per year.

The total amount depends on the length of immigration permission granted.

Students should therefore budget for:

Tuition fees

Student Visa fee

Immigration Health Surcharge

Maintenance funds

TB test, where required

Travel and accommodation costs

10. Prepare the Required Documents

Depending on your circumstances, your Student Visa application may require:

Valid passport

CAS reference

Financial evidence

TB certificate

ATAS certificate, if required

Evidence of English-language ability, where applicable

Evidence of parental or guardian consent if under 18

Evidence of relationship to a parent or guardian if under 18

Financial sponsorship documents, where applicable

The UK government may request additional documents depending on your individual circumstances.

Documents that are not in English or Welsh may also require an appropriate certified translation.

UK Student Visa Application Process

The application process can be broken down into these steps:

1: Choose a UK University: Apply to a licensed UK education provider and secure admission to an eligible course.

2: Meet Your University’s Conditions: Complete any academic, financial, English-language or other conditions attached to your offer.

3: Receive Your CAS: Your university will provide your CAS once you are eligible for sponsorship.

4: Prepare Your Visa Documents: Prepare your passport, financial evidence and any other documents required for your circumstances.

5: Complete the Online Visa Application: Apply for the Student Visa through the official UK government website.

6: Prove Your Identity: You will be told how to prove your identity during the application process. Depending on your circumstances, this may involve the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attending a visa application centre for fingerprints and a photograph.

7: Submit Your Application: Review your information carefully before submitting your application.

8: Wait for a Decision: Applicants applying from outside the UK will usually receive a decision within 3 weeks, although some applications can take longer.

Official application: Apply for a UK Student Visa on GOV.UK

When Can You Apply for a UK Student Visa?

If you are applying from outside the UK, you can normally apply up to 6 months before your course begins.

If you are applying from inside the UK, you can normally apply up to 3 months before your course starts, provided you meet the rules for applying from within the UK.

Do not wait until the last minute to prepare your application.

Students should allow enough time for:

University admission

CAS issuance

Financial evidence

TB testing

ATAS clearance, if required

Visa application

Biometric appointment, where required

Travel arrangements

Can International Students Bring Their Spouse or Children to the UK?

This is an important issue for international students in 2026.

Most international students cannot bring dependants under the Student Visa route.

There are exceptions.

Dependants may be permitted where the student is:

A government-sponsored student studying a full-time course lasting more than 6 months; or

A full-time postgraduate student studying a course of at least 9 months that meets the current research/doctoral requirements.

For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course generally needs to be a PhD, another doctoral qualification, or a research-based higher degree to qualify for the dependant route.

This means that someone enrolling in a standard taught master’s degree should not assume that their spouse or children can automatically accompany them.

Check the current dependant rules before accepting an offer.

Can You Work on a UK Student Visa?

Students may be permitted to work while studying, but the amount and type of work permitted depends on their course and circumstances.

Some students may work up to a specified number of hours during term time, while others have more restricted work conditions.

Your visa or decision information will state the conditions that apply to you.

You must not assume that every international student has the same work rights.

The Student Visa also prohibits certain activities, including working as a professional sportsperson or sports coach and being self-employed.

UK Student Visa Tips for International Students

Before submitting your application:

Check that your university is a licensed student sponsor.

Make sure your CAS information is correct.

Calculate your tuition and maintenance funds carefully.

Keep required funds in the account for the required period.

Check whether you need a TB certificate.

Check whether your course requires ATAS.

Make sure your passport is valid.

Check your English-language evidence.

Review every answer before submitting the application.

Do not book non-refundable travel before your visa is approved.

The UK government advises visa applicants not to book travel until they receive a decision.

UK Student Visa Requirements for Nigerian Students

For Nigerian students, the basic Student Visa requirements are the same UK immigration requirements that apply to eligible international students.

However, Nigerian applicants should pay particular attention to the TB test requirement, because Nigeria is on the UK’s list of countries requiring TB screening in applicable cases.

Nigerian students should also make sure their financial evidence is prepared correctly and that all information provided to UKVI is accurate and consistent with their university documents.

UK Student Visa FAQs

How much money do I need for a UK Student Visa in 2026?

For students who need to demonstrate maintenance funds, the current requirement is £1,529 per month for courses in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to 9 months. You may also need to show money for outstanding tuition fees.

How much is the UK Student Visa fee?

The current Student Visa application fee is £558 for applications made from outside or inside the UK under the applicable Student Visa routes.

Do Nigerian students need a TB test for a UK Student Visa?

Generally, Nigerian applicants coming to the UK for more than 6 months who meet the residence conditions for TB screening need a certificate from an approved clinic.

Can I bring my spouse to the UK on a Student Visa?

Only certain students can bring dependants. Current rules mainly cover government-sponsored students meeting the relevant conditions and students on qualifying postgraduate research or doctoral programmes.

How long does a UK Student Visa take?

Applications made from outside the UK usually receive a decision within 3 weeks, although individual cases can take longer.

Can I apply for a UK Student Visa before receiving my CAS?

You need your CAS information for the Student Visa application, so students should wait until their sponsoring institution has issued the CAS before submitting the application.

Final Checklist

Before submitting your UK Student Visa application, make sure you have:

Requirements can vary depending on your nationality, course and personal circumstances. Always check the latest Australian Department of Home Affairs requirements before applying.

What Is the Australia Student Visa?

The Student Visa (subclass 500) allows international students to study a registered course in Australia.

Depending on your circumstances, the visa can also allow you to:

Stay in Australia for the duration of your course.

Work under the conditions attached to your visa.

Bring eligible family members.

Study an eligible full-time course.

You must comply with all visa conditions while in Australia.

1. Get Admission to an Australian Institution

Before applying for a Student Visa, you generally need to be accepted into a registered Australian education provider.

Your course must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

After accepting your place and completing the required enrolment process, your institution will provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

You will generally need the CoE when submitting your Student Visa application.

2. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)

The CoE is an important document for your Australian Student Visa application.

It confirms that you have been accepted and enrolled in a registered course.

Your CoE normally contains information such as:

Your name

Course

Education provider

Course duration

Start and end dates

Enrolment details

Check the information carefully and make sure it matches your passport and visa application.

3. Meet the Genuine Student Requirement

Australia uses the Genuine Student (GS) requirement to assess whether an applicant genuinely intends to study in Australia.

You will be asked questions about your:

Current circumstances

Reasons for choosing the course

Reasons for choosing Australia

Education history

Future plans

How the course will benefit you

Your answers should be accurate, consistent and supported by relevant evidence where appropriate.

The Genuine Student requirement replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for Student Visa applications lodged from 23 March 2024.

4. Meet the Financial Capacity Requirement

You may need to demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourself while studying in Australia.

The financial requirement can cover:

Travel costs

Tuition fees

Living costs

Schooling costs for eligible school-aged dependants, where applicable

The amount required can change, so students should check the current financial capacity figure on the official Department of Home Affairs website before applying.

Do not rely on old figures found on websites or social media.

5. Provide Evidence of English Language Ability

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to provide evidence of English-language proficiency.

Australia accepts certain English-language tests and qualifications under its immigration rules.

The required score can depend on your circumstances and the type of visa application.

Students should check the current list of accepted English tests and minimum scores before booking a test.

Do not assume that IELTS is the only accepted test.

6. Have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

Most international students must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) while studying in Australia.

OSHC helps cover certain medical and hospital expenses during your stay.

You generally need to arrange appropriate health insurance for yourself and any accompanying family members.

Your education provider may help arrange OSHC, or you may arrange it through an approved insurer.

7. Meet Australia’s Health Requirements

Student Visa applicants may need to undergo health examinations.

The examinations required depend on factors such as:

Your age

Your country of residence

Your intended activities in Australia

The length of your stay

Your individual circumstances

If medical examinations are required, the Department of Home Affairs will provide instructions.

Applicants should use approved panel physicians or clinics where required.

8. Meet the Character Requirement

Applicants must meet Australia’s character requirements.

You may be asked to provide police certificates or other character documents depending on your circumstances.

Answer character-related questions truthfully.

Providing false or incomplete information can create serious problems with your visa application.

9. Provide a Valid Passport

Your passport is a fundamental document for your Student Visa application.

Make sure:

Your passport is valid.

Your name is entered correctly.

Your date of birth is correct.

Your passport details match your education and visa documents.

If your personal information differs between documents, resolve the discrepancy before applying where possible.

10. Provide Your Identity Documents

Depending on your circumstances, you may need documents confirming your identity and family information.

These may include:

Passport

Birth certificate

National identity document

Marriage certificate, where applicable

Evidence of name change, where applicable

The exact documents requested can vary between applicants.

11. Provide Academic Documents

Your education history can be important when applying for an Australian Student Visa.

Depending on your circumstances, you may need:

Academic certificates

Transcripts

Previous qualifications

Evidence of current or previous study

Employment documents where relevant

Make sure the information you provide is consistent with your education history and your Genuine Student answers.

12. Prepare Your Genuine Student Supporting Documents

Your application should accurately explain why you want to study in Australia.

Useful supporting evidence can include:

Previous academic records

Employment evidence

Evidence of professional experience

Evidence of financial circumstances

Information about your chosen course

Evidence explaining your study and career plans

Not every applicant will need every document.

The Department of Home Affairs considers the information provided in the application and supporting evidence when assessing the Genuine Student requirement.

13. Include Family Members Correctly

If eligible family members are accompanying you, you must declare them in your Student Visa application as required.

Eligible family members can include:

Your spouse or de facto partner

Your dependent children

UK Student Visa Documents Checklist 2026

1. Valid Passport or Travel Document

The first document you should have ready is your current passport or another valid travel document.

Your passport is used to establish your identity and nationality during the visa application process.

Before applying, check that:

Your passport is valid.

Your personal details are correct.

Your name matches your university and visa application information.

You have the correct passport available for your application.

GOV.UK lists a current passport or other valid travel document as a required document for a Student Visa application.

2. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is one of the most important documents for your UK Student Visa application.

Your UK university or education provider issues the CAS after offering you a place and completing its sponsorship process.

The CAS contains important information about your:

University or education provider

Course

Course dates

Tuition fees

Sponsorship

Personal details

You will normally need the CAS reference number when completing your Student Visa application.

Before applying, carefully check the information on your CAS. If you notice an error, contact your university before submitting your visa application.

GOV.UK specifically lists the CAS from your course provider among the documents required for a Student Visa application.

3. Proof of Financial Funds

Financial evidence is another major part of the UK Student Visa documents checklist.

You may need to prove that you have enough money to:

Pay your outstanding tuition fees for the required period.

Support yourself while living in the UK.

For the current 2026/27 maintenance requirement, students generally need:

£1,529 per month for courses in London, for up to 9 months.

£1,171 per month for courses outside London, for up to 9 months.

That means the maximum maintenance amount is:

£13,761 for London

£10,539 outside London

You may also need to show money for your outstanding course fees. The amount is normally shown on your CAS.

How Long Must the Money Be Held?

Where you are required to provide financial evidence, the money generally needs to have been held for at least 28 consecutive days.

The end of that 28-day period must normally be within 31 days of the date you submit your visa application.

This is why students should prepare their finances well before starting the visa application.

4. Bank Statements or Other Financial Evidence

If you are using your personal or family funds to meet the financial requirement, you may need acceptable evidence showing that the required money is available.

Depending on your circumstances, acceptable evidence can include financial documents such as bank statements.

Students using a student loan or official financial sponsorship may instead need documentation from the relevant loan provider or sponsor.

The UK government has specific rules about what financial evidence can be accepted, so applicants should check the latest financial evidence guidance before submitting their application.

5. TB Test Certificate

If you are applying from a country where the UK requires tuberculosis testing, you may need to provide a TB test certificate.

Nigeria is currently on the UK’s list of countries where applicants may need a TB test.

For Nigerian applicants, the requirement generally applies when coming to the UK for 6 months or more and the relevant residence conditions are met.

The test must be carried out at a Home Office-approved clinic.

For applicants in Nigeria, GOV.UK currently lists the International Organization for Migration (IOM) clinic in Abuja as an approved testing location.

Do not use a TB certificate from an unapproved clinic.

6. ATAS Certificate

Some international students may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.

ATAS is not required for every Student Visa applicant.

It can apply to certain postgraduate courses involving sensitive subjects, depending on the course and nationality.

If your course and nationality require ATAS clearance, you should obtain the certificate before applying for your Student Visa. GOV.UK advises students studying at master’s level or above to check whether ATAS applies to their course.

7. Evidence of English Language Ability

Depending on your course and circumstances, you may need evidence that you meet the UK’s English-language requirement.

Your university may have assessed your English as part of the admission process, and the way you prove English for immigration purposes can depend on the level and type of your course.

Do not automatically assume that every Student Visa applicant needs an IELTS certificate.

Check your CAS and the official Student Visa English-language requirements to determine what applies to you.

8. Financial Sponsorship Letter

If your tuition fees and living expenses are being paid by an official financial sponsor, you may need evidence of that sponsorship.

This can include sponsorship from:

A government

An international organisation

A university

A scholarship provider

Another qualifying official sponsor

If your sponsorship information is not recorded on your CAS, you may need a sponsorship letter containing the required details.

Students receiving scholarships should therefore keep their official scholarship or sponsorship documentation safely.

9. Student Loan Evidence

Students funding their studies through an eligible student loan may need to provide a student loan letter.

The UK government specifies requirements for the letter, including information about:

The loan

The amount

The applicant

The loan provider

When the money will become available

The letter must meet the requirements set out in the official financial evidence guidance.

10. Documents for Students Under 18

Students under 18 have additional documentation requirements.

You may need:

Written consent from your parent or legal guardian.

Evidence of your relationship with your parent or guardian.

Evidence relating to your living and care arrangements in the UK.

GOV.UK states that parental or guardian consent must cover the visa application, travel to the UK and living and care arrangements.

A birth certificate or another government-issued document may be used to demonstrate the relationship where required.

11. Certified Translation

If any document you submit is not in English or Welsh, you may need to provide a certified translation.

Do not simply submit an untranslated document and assume UKVI will accept it.

Make sure the translation meets the applicable UKVI requirements.

12. Previous Immigration Documents

Depending on your circumstances, you may need additional information or documents relating to your previous immigration history.

This can be particularly relevant if you are applying from inside the UK or switching from another immigration route.

The documents required can vary from applicant to applicant, so always follow the document instructions generated for your specific application.

UK Student Visa Documents Checklist for Nigerian Students

For Nigerian students applying for a UK Student Visa, a basic checklist may include:

Valid Nigerian passport

CAS reference number

Financial evidence, if required

Bank statements or other acceptable financial evidence

TB test certificate, where required

ATAS certificate, if applicable

English-language evidence, where required

Scholarship or sponsorship documents, if applicable

Student loan evidence, if applicable

Parental consent, if under 18

Proof of relationship to parent/guardian, if under 18

Certified translations, where required

Nigerian applicants should pay particular attention to the TB requirement because Nigeria is currently included among the countries requiring TB testing in applicable circumstances.

Do You Need to Submit Every Document on This Checklist?

No.

Not every student will need every document listed above.

For example:

A student who does not require ATAS does not need an ATAS certificate.

An applicant over 18 does not need parental consent documents because of age.

A student who qualifies for a financial exemption may not need to provide financial evidence.

A student from a country where TB testing is not required may not need a TB certificate.

GOV.UK states that additional documents may be required depending on individual circumstances.

The safest approach is to use this checklist as a preparation guide and then follow the specific document requirements generated during your official visa application.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Using an expired passport: Check your passport before beginning your application.

2. Providing incorrect CAS information: Compare your visa application with the information on your CAS.

3. Showing insufficient funds: Calculate your tuition and maintenance requirements carefully.

4. Not meeting the 28-day financial requirement: If you need to provide financial evidence, make sure the required funds have been held for the required period.

5. Using an unapproved TB clinic: Nigerian applicants who need TB testing should use an approved clinic.

6. Forgetting additional documents: ATAS, sponsorship, parental consent and other documents may apply depending on your circumstances.

7. Submitting untranslated documents: Documents that are not in English or Welsh may require certified translations.

UK Student Visa Document Preparation Tips

Before submitting your application:

Create a digital folder containing all your documents.

Check your passport details carefully.

Keep your CAS reference easily accessible.

Calculate your required maintenance funds.

Check your bank evidence against the financial rules.

Complete your TB test early if you need one.

Check whether ATAS applies to your course.

Keep scholarship or sponsorship letters available.

Prepare certified translations where necessary.

Review the final document checklist generated during your application.

If you need to provide financial evidence, your bank statement must show that you have enough money to pay your required tuition fees and support yourself while studying in the UK.

One of the most important rules is that the required funds must normally be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the closing balance on your latest financial evidence must be dated within 31 days of your visa application.

UK Student Visa Bank Statement Requirements

1. Calculate How Much Money You Need

Before preparing your bank statement, calculate the amount you need to show.

For a UK Student Visa, you normally need money for:

Your outstanding tuition fees for the relevant academic year.

Your living costs in the UK.

The current maintenance requirement is:

£1,529 per month for students studying in London.

£1,171 per month for students studying outside London.

The maintenance amount can be required for up to 9 months.

That means the maximum maintenance amount is:

London: £13,761

Outside London: £10,539

You may also need to show your outstanding tuition fees as stated on your CAS.

Example

If your CAS shows £12,000 in outstanding tuition fees and you are studying outside London, you could need to demonstrate:

£12,000 + £10,539 = £22,539

Your own circumstances may be different, so calculate the amount using your actual CAS and current GOV.UK requirements.

2. Keep the Money in the Account for 28 Days

This is one of the most important rules.

If you need to provide financial evidence, you generally need to have the required funds in the account for 28 consecutive days.

The 28 days is calculated from the closing balance shown on your most recent financial evidence.

Simple example

If your bank statement shows that the required balance was maintained from 1 September through 28 September, you have demonstrated 28 days.

Do not wait until a few days before applying and deposit the required amount for the first time.

3. Make Sure Your Latest Statement Is Recent

Your financial evidence must normally be dated no more than 31 days before the date you apply for your visa.

For example, if you submit your visa application on 30 September, your latest financial evidence should normally have a closing date within the previous 31 days.

This is why you should check the dates carefully before submitting your application.

4. Use an Acceptable Bank Account

Your funds should be held in an account that meets UKVI’s requirements.

The account must allow you to access the money immediately.

GOV.UK says acceptable funds can generally be held in personal bank or building society accounts, including current and savings accounts, provided the account meets the applicable requirements.

UKVI does not accept certain types of financial instruments, including:

Overdrafts

Cryptocurrency

Stocks and shares

Pensions

Certain non-regulated bank accounts

Accounts without electronic record keeping

Always check the latest official guidance before relying on a particular account.

5. Make Sure Your Name Appears Correctly

Your bank statement should clearly identify the account holder.

GOV.UK says financial evidence should show:

Your name

Name of the bank or building society

Amount of money available

If you are using your parent’s or partner’s account, different requirements apply because the account holder is not you.

Make sure the name and other personal details are consistent with your visa application and supporting documents.

6. You Can Use Your Parent’s Money

You do not always have to keep the money in your own bank account.

Under the UK Student Visa rules, you may be able to rely on money held by your parent or legal guardian, provided the required evidence and consent are supplied.

GOV.UK also allows certain applicants to rely on their partner’s money where the applicable conditions are met.

If your parent is funding your education, prepare the required evidence showing:

Their bank statement

Their name

Their relationship to you

Their consent for you to use the funds, where required

Any other supporting evidence requested by UKVI

7. Avoid Sudden Unexplained Deposits

A large deposit shortly before your visa application can make your financial evidence harder to understand.

The important issue is not simply having a large balance on one day. You need to demonstrate that you held the required funds for the required period.

If money has recently been transferred into the account, keep evidence explaining where it came from.

Examples can include:

Salary payments

Education loan

Scholarship

Transfer from a parent

Sale of an asset

Other legitimate sources

Never create false documents or misleading explanations for your bank statement.

8. Do Not Use Fake Bank Statements

Never submit a fake or altered bank statement.

UKVI can verify financial evidence with the bank. If the evidence cannot be verified, your application may be refused.

Your documents should be genuine and should accurately reflect the money available to you.

9. Your Bank Statement Can Be Electronic

UKVI’s financial evidence guidance allows bank statements to be provided as paper or electronic downloads, provided they meet the relevant requirements.

If you download your statement online, make sure it clearly shows the required information.

Avoid submitting screenshots that do not provide enough information to verify the account and balance.

10. Keep Your Bank Statement Complete

Do not submit a document that hides important information.

Your statement should clearly show the relevant:

Account holder

Bank

Account details

Transactions

Dates

Balances

If your bank provides official downloadable statements, use those where possible.

11. What If Your Money Is in a Foreign Currency?

Your funds do not necessarily have to be held in British pounds.

If your money is held in another currency, UKVI will convert it into pounds sterling using the applicable exchange-rate method. GOV.UK states that it uses the OANDA spot exchange rate for the date of the visa application.

Because exchange rates change, avoid calculating your finances too tightly around the minimum requirement.

12. What If You Have a Scholarship?

If you have an official scholarship or financial sponsorship, you may be able to use evidence of that sponsorship instead of relying entirely on personal bank funds.

Your sponsorship evidence should clearly show the relevant funding and duration.

Government, university and other qualifying official sponsorships can be used as financial evidence where they meet the rules.

13. What If You Have a Student Loan?

Students using an eligible student loan can provide evidence from their loan provider.

The documentation must meet the UK’s financial evidence requirements.

Do not assume that simply having a loan approval letter automatically satisfies every financial requirement.

Check the current GOV.UK guidance for the type of loan and evidence you have.

UK Student Visa Bank Statement Checklist

Before submitting your application, check:

Common Bank Statement Mistakes to Avoid

Depositing money too late: Do not deposit the required funds immediately before applying and assume that the balance is sufficient.

Showing less than the required amount: Calculate your tuition and maintenance requirements before preparing your financial evidence.

Using an old statement: Make sure your latest financial evidence falls within the required period.

An unacceptable account: Not every financial product qualifies as acceptable evidence.

Using unexplained funds: Keep legitimate evidence showing the source of significant funds where appropriate.

Submitting altered documents: Never edit or manipulate a bank statement.

Forgetting your parent’s supporting documents: If you rely on your parent’s money, make sure you provide the additional evidence required under the rules.

How to Prepare Your Bank Statement Step by Step

1: Check your CAS and find your outstanding tuition fees.

2: Determine whether your university is in London or outside London.

10: Review everything before submitting your visa application.

FAQs

How many months of bank statements do I need for a UK Student Visa?

The key requirement is not simply the number of months shown on the statement. If financial evidence is required, you generally need to demonstrate that the required funds were held for 28 consecutive days, with the closing balance on evidence dated within 31 days of your application.

Can I use my parent’s bank statement for a UK Student Visa?

Yes, under the applicable rules, you can rely on money held by a parent or legal guardian, but you must provide the required supporting evidence and consent.

Can I use a savings account for my UK Student Visa?

A qualifying savings account may be acceptable if it meets the relevant UKVI requirements and the funds are immediately accessible.

Can I use a foreign currency bank account?

Yes, funds can be held in a foreign currency. UKVI converts the amount into pounds using the applicable exchange rate.

What happens if my bank statement does not show enough money?

If you are required to provide financial evidence and your documents do not demonstrate the required amount, you may not meet the Student Visa financial requirement.

Can I deposit money into my account before applying?

You can add legitimate funds to your account, but you must still meet the 28-day holding requirement where it applies. Keep appropriate evidence explaining significant legitimate deposits.
