The ASCL’s scholarship is an annual award presented to a master’s student who has completed their thesis based on research conducted on an African topic. The award not only comes with a monetary prize of €500 but also offers the invaluable opportunity for the winning thesis to be published in the ASCL’s African Studies Collection.

Scholarship Benefits

  • The award comes with a €500 prize and online publication of the winning thesis, as well as digital access to all submitted theses through the ASCL’s library catalog.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible applicants for the Africa Thesis Award 2024 are Master’s students who have completed their thesis at a university in Africa or the Netherlands between August 2023 and August 2024.
  • Students from non-Dutch universities can also apply, as long as they have received a grade of A (or equivalent) and their supervisor provides a letter confirming the thesis’s excellence and supporting the grade score.

  • The thesis should be based on original research with a geographical focus on an African country, region, or migrant communities, and can be submitted in English, French, or Dutch.
  • The ASCL is looking for standout theses that showcase unique subject matter, innovative theory, and sound methodology, as well as providing new insights and a balance between scientific rigor and societal relevance.
  • The jury also evaluates the thesis’s significance about development issues, its writing style and readability, and its appeal to a general audience.
